Name: Bettye Jean Atkins Date: December 9th, 1939 - February 25th, 2010 Obituary: Bettye Atkins quietly passed away February 25 at age of 70 in her adopted home of Asbury Park, N.J. Ms. Atkins was born in Putnam, Al, and was a resident of Asbury Park for ten years. She also loved in Fair Haven, NJ, Glen Burnie, MD and Chicago, IL. Ms. Atkins was a graduate of Mobile County Training School, Crane Junior College and Anne Arundel Community College. Ms. Atkins was the Proprietor of ‘Foot Steps in Paradise’, located in Asbury Park. She also held various office positions with Marriot In-Flight Services, General Electric, Crown Central Petroleum Corporation and Riverview Hospital. Ms. Atkins was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church at Neptune. She was a member of the NAACP, and as a local proprietor she was extremely active in the redevelopment and rejuvenation of the Asbury Park business districts. Ms. Atkins was predeceased by her parents, Mattie and Wiley Christian, three brothers, Tim Williams, Wiley and Clifford Christian and her son Shelton Dunning. She is survived by her sons Tony Christian-Dunning and Orlando Dunning; three sisters, Jannie Harris (Ala), Allie Law (Chicago) and MaryAnn Loyd (Missouri), six grandchildren and five great-grand, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and relatives.
