Devoted husband, loving father, and Nonno, Giovanni Merendino of Tinton Falls, NJ has died at age 78 after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Carini, Italy to Antonino Merendino and Rosalia Pecoraro. He served in the Italian military before coming to America to work in the Italian Restaurant business with his brother. He went back to Italy after 9 years where he met his wife at age 36 and they were married on April 25, 1978. With her he came back to America to build his family. He and his wife built several successful businesses in Virginia and New Jersey while raising a family. He retired with his wife after many years of hard work and teaching good work ethic to his children. He spent the last years of his life as a doting Nonno to his 3 grandsons. He was a big soccer enthusiast and planned events and outings around all of the important games. "Forza Milano!" He enjoyed family gatherings,and playing card games such as poker, scopa, and solitaire. He also loved music and dancing. ` He was well loved by his family and a respected businessman in the community. He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Laura "Natalina" Merendino, his daughter, Sabrina Reid, her husband, Tom Reid; 3 grandsons,Dominic, Dante, and Dino, of Tinton Falls, sons, Gregory Merendino and his wife, Molly, of Bayonne, Riccardo Merendino and his wife, Tara, of Mantoloking, one sister, Ina Mondrone, of Lyndenhurst, NY and one brother, Gaspare Merendino, and his wife, Joan, of Newport News, VA. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased in death by his brother Tommy Merendino of Bayshore, NY. Effective 9 p.m. Saturday, March 21, 2020 all funeral homes are operating under newly issued Executive Order No. 107. All public funeral gatherings, viewings or ceremonies therefore should not be conducted in any funeral home, place of worship, cemetery or crematory until further notice. Only immediate family should be permitted to privately identify, participate in a non-public viewing and/or abbreviated service and witness the final disposition.
