Geraldine (Gerry) Catherine McEntegart

Gerry McEntegart was born in the Bronx, July 22, 1935. She was daughter of Thomas Fogarty and Theresa Miodini. Gerry was raised in Queens by Theresa and her step-father Victor Zourides, along with her step-brother Andrew Zourides. Gerry graduated Roosevelt High School and was a typist and stenographer in her early years, before becoming a homemaker and an artist. Gerry met a handsome man while they both were vacationing in Point Pleasant, New Jersey and in 1963, Gerry married that man, the love of her life, Stephen McEntegart. Together they raised two sons, Douglas and Bryan. Their marriage carries beyond the 53 years they shared until Stephen’s passing in 2016; they are happily together again, reunited in the hereafter. In her youth, Gerry loved tennis, cage-fighting, and swimming. She remained active throughout her life, and at ninety still practiced yoga, pilates and tai chi daily. Yes, all three, daily. In Seabrook Village, besides her exercise regimen, she was a pool hustler and reportedly cheated at scrabble. (Spurious claims the family vehemently denies.) Gerry was a capricious spirit, always up for mischief that her sons would contrive. Whether it was creating and donning an outrageous Easter bonnet, sporting a clown nose when out on the town, or saluting deserving motorists with the state bird, Gerry was always game. Gerry was a breast cancer survivor of many years, and when bone cancer manifested at the end of June, she was nonplussed. “I lived a long life, and I’m ready.” Gerry left with cinematic grace. She listened to her family gathered at her bedside, caught up on all the gossip, and when they left, Gerry departed as well, holding hands with her son, Douglas, and her future daughter-in-law, Maureen. But Gerry’s legacy is her art. Her works in oil and pastel were influenced by Degas, Matese, and VanGogh. She won awards in juried art shows in Monmouth and Ocean counties from representatives of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Newark Museum, the Asbury Park Press, the Noyes Museum and the New York Times. Her creative talent lives on in the hands of both of her sons as well. She continued painting until her last days, with works left unfinished, like a true artist. Gerry is survived by her sons, Douglas and Bryan, her grandchildren Shannon, Connor, Kyle, Reilly and Hayden, and her brother Andrew.
