John M. Hynes

John Michael Hynes, at the age of 93, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on January 15, 2026 at Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank, NJ, where he had become a preferred customer. He was born in 1932 in Brooklyn, the garden spot of the east coast, to his beloved parents Mary Garrahy and Michael Hynes. John raised his devoted children, Michael and Anna (Setaro), in the picturesque neighborhood of Marine Park, with his cherished wife of 52 years, Rita Fitzgerald Hynes, who had put up with him long enough and departed this world in 2020. John, affectionately known as Johnny to many nieces and nephews, was hard working and dedicated. He served in the U.S. Army, enjoyed a 35 year career at J.P. Morgan then kept active in his retirement by taking long walks almost every day - whether to Coney Island to enjoy the ocean breeze or over the Brooklyn Bridge for the city views - the benefit of having never obtained a driver's license. He tried out new hobbies of stained glass making and learning to play the piano. He was a voracious consumer of news, politics, and the stock market, listening to his transistor radio and monitoring world events every day, which kept his mind sharp until the end. He loved history, he loved Brooklyn, he loved New York, and he loved America. He hated the Dodgers for leaving Brooklyn. John always put his family first and sacrificed to ensure he provided for them. He loved his family, friends and pets - even Champ, with whom he shared a love/hate relationship. He lived the last year of his life at Sunrise of Lincroft where he made many new and cherished friends. He was a kind man who was always laughing, joking, dancing, helping others in big and small ways, accepting them for who they were. All he ever wanted was a kind word. John is survived by his children, his son-in-law, Joseph Setaro, the grandchildren he adored, Julia and Joseph, and his amazing sister Anna Artz. He was predeceased by his sister Mary Hannan and his brothers-in-law James Hannan and Gerald Artz. A Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Name of Jesus in Park Slope on Saturday, January 24th at 10 a.m. Burial of cremated remains will follow at St. John’s Cemetery in Queens, NY.
