Thomas M. Basil Sr.

Thomas M. Basil, Sr., age 78, of Tinton Falls, NJ passed away on Thursday, November 17, 2016 at Riverview Medical Center surrounded by his family. He was born on August 25, 1938 in Buffalo, NY to Charles and Ella. He attended Bishop Timon High School and then graduated from his beloved Siena College with a B.A. in English in 1960. After leaving Albany Law School, Tom began his insurance career in 1962 with The Travelers Insurance Company in New York. He then became an Assistant Manager of Insurance with BASF Corporation in Parsippany, NJ. It was not long after that he became a full Risk Manager with Schiavone-Bonomo Corporation in Jersey City, NJ. Following this, his career led him to become the Director of Insurance Operations for Sequa Corporation in New York, NY. While there, he was able to travel the world negotiating and litigating with foreign and domestic insurance companies. Tom truly reached the pinnacle of the insurance industry and became the President of the American Management Association. In his later years Tom was able to help his son expand his own insurance business in Somers Point, NJ, something that they both cherished. Tom’s interests included a love of baseball, reading, Republican politics, and his beloved movies. Big T loved a great steak, a bottle of wine, and, of course, a muddled manhattan. His quick wit, sarcasm, and steel trap mind will be missed. Tom is survived by his beloved daughter Claire of Westfield, NJ, his son Thomas and wife Delia of Galloway, NJ, his loving grandsons, Reagan and Christian, and his brother Charles and his wife, JoAnn, of Buffalo, NY. Tom was preceded in death by his daughter, Michelle, his parents and sister Mary. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 1, 2016 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Bongarzone Funeral Home, 2400 Shafto Road, Tinton Falls, NJ 07712. A memorial mass will then be held on December 2, 2016 at 11:30 AM at The Catholic Church of the Holy Trinity, 315 1st St, Westfield, NJ 07090. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Tom’s name to Development and External Affairs, Siena College, 515 Loudon Road, Loudonville, NY 12211.
